Strip yield modelling of fatigue crack under variable amplitude loading

چکیده
The results from ‘strip yield’ approach of the FASTRAN type models of plasticity induced crack closure effects of fatigue cracks subjected to variable amplitude loadings are presented. The strip yield results are compared with authors’ finite element (FE) and experimental results. It has been observed that the strip yield model is seen to be fundamentally limited by choice of α (constraint factor) and corresponding to treat baseline closure effects. Double overload closure behavior is functionally similar for both strip yield and FE models. Under multiple overloads, an important functional difference is seen between FE and strip yield models. This has been linked to the absence of in-plane constraint in the strip yield model, which is seen to have a distinct decreasing influence on on-going closure effects.

Application of a strip-yield model to predict crack growth under variable-amplitude and spectrum loading – Part 2: Middle-crack-tension specimens
In previous work, fatigue-crack-growth tests were conducted on middle-crack tension, M(T), and compact, C(T), specimens made from the same D16Cz (clad) aluminum alloy sheet. These tests were conducted over a wide range of stress ratios (R = Pmin/Pmax = 0.5 to 0.75) to generate crack-growth-rate data from threshold to near fracture. These tests were used to generate the effective stress-intensit...
متن کاملApplication of a strip-yield model to predict crack growth under variable-amplitude and spectrum loading – Part 1: Compact specimens
Fatigue-crack-growth tests were conducted on compact, C(T), specimens made of D16Cz (clad) aluminum alloy under constant-amplitude loading, a single spike overload, and simulated aircraft spectrum loading. Constant-amplitude tests were conducted to generate crack-growth-rate data from threshold to near fracture over a wide range of stress ratios (R = Pmin/Pmax = 0.1–0.75) using the new compress...
متن کاملSimulation of near-tip crack behaviour and its correlation to fatigue crack growth with a modified strip-yield model
A modified strip-yield model has been developed to simulate the plasticity-induced crack closure under the constant amplitude (CA) and a single overload loading conditions. The paper focuses on the simulation of the near tip crack profiles and stress distributions during the fatigue process. Detailed information on near-tip stress and displacement fields at the maximum load (Pmax), the minimum ...

The present paper is concerned with the application of a “plasticity-induced” crack closure model to study fatigue crack growth under various load histories. The model was based on the Dugdale model but modified to leave plastically deformed material in the wake of the advancing crack. The model was used to correlate crack growth rates under constant-amplitude loading and then used to predict c...
متن کاملAnalyses of Fatigue and Fatigue-crack Growth under Constant- and Variable-amplitude Loading
Studies on the growth of small cracks have led to the observation that fatigue life of many engineering materials is primarily “crack growth” from micro-structural features, such as inclusion particles, voids, slip-bands or from manufacturing defects. This paper reviews the capabilities of a plasticity-induced crack-closure model to predict fatigue lives of metallic materials using “small-crack...
